Medical Maggots™

Medical Maggots is a larval debridement therapy. INTENDED USES: To treat skin and soft tissue wounds. CLAIMED FEATURES: Maggot therapy is the controlled, therapeutic use of live blow fly larvae ("maggots") to treat skin and soft tissue wounds.

Product Information

Debridement is important to promote wound healing. Debridement is the process through which clinicians remove dead tissue and foreign materials from wounds. Dead tissue may be of different colors: black, gray, yellow or white. There are several methods of wound debridement, and debridement with larvae is one of them.
Rapid debridement can be achieved in as little as one treatment with disinfected larvae. Larvae are instinctively selective and eat only the dead tissue of a wound. They are precise, clean, quick and clinically effective. Although debridement with disinfected larvae can be a good solution for healthy and natural wound debridement, psychological and aesthetic concerns are understandable in contemporary culture. They either come loose and can be placed under a bandage, or come trapped in bandages. Patients need to consult their clinicians before opting for this type of debridement.

Is it covered by Medicare Part B?

Debridement is a medical procedure covered by Medicare as long as requirements are met. Among requirements, the wound needs to have devitalized, fibrotic, nonviable tissue, infection, necrosis, foreign matter, and the debridement method used needs to be recognized by Medicare as a proven method, supported by valid scientific literature. Larval debridement is one of these methods.
