Product Information
Moisture barriers prevent skin water loss by acting as a physical barrier when applied over the skin. These products generally contain a formulation of oils, waxes, or silicone. Many products contain a combination of a moisture barrier, humectant (attracts water to tissue), and/or emollient (assists with skin elasticity and resilience).
Moisture barriers protect the skin from exposure to excessive moisture with a barrier product in order to reduce the risk of pressure damage. Moisture barriers are indicated for use on stage I pressure ulcers, on periwound skin to prevent skin maceration, and on pressure points, bony prominences, and other at-risk skin for the prevention of skin breakdown.
Such products are often utilized for the prevention and treatment of skin irritation due to bodily fluids (urine, feces) in persons with incontinence and other moisture-related skin afflictions.
Moisture barriers may come in a paste, cream, ointment or spray.
Spray application means less chance of cross contamination, which may improve infection control
No rubbing necessary after spraying affected area, resulting in less friction and shear with removal and minimizing skin breakdown
Helps reduce product waste and saves money
Moisture barrier creams are incredibly easy to use, as long as proper cleaning procedures are followed. Never apply a moisture barrier cream to a soiled perineal area. Follow these simple steps to protect patients against skin deterioration and enhance their comfort.
Clean the skin with a mild skin soap
Pat the skin dry or allow to air dry
Apply a thin layer of moisture barrier cream to the affected area
Repeat above steps 2-4 times daily
Repeat above steps after each incontinence episode
