Hello! A referral, from ID actually, was received for a patient with soft tissue radiation necrosis (radiation cystitis). Hx: prostate cancer, s/p radical prostatectomy. Current symptoms include pelvic pain, frequency, incomplete emptying, weak stream, straining, nocturia, incontinence.

I don't have a recent scope on hand currently. I do have a note from uro, but no mention of radiation cystitis. Recommendation was medication adjustment and research a sling or artificial urinary sphincter for symptom management.

How big of an issue is it if radiation details from so long ago are not obtainable? Do you recommend a scope from uro or at least uro speaking in support of HBOT for radiation cystitis?

Thank you!

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for your question. Other colleagues may have additional thoughts, but this indication is for delayed radiation injury and CMS/insurances do require documentation of dates of radiation as an eligibility criteria. Obtaining the records and adding them to this patient's records will be necessary to satisfy medical necessity requirements. In the event of an audit, these records will be needed.

The scope is helpful as is mention of delayed radiation injury.

Hope this helps.
