prosthetic eye

Hello,

We have a 85 yr old male with radiation cystitis scheduled to start HBOT soon. He has a prosthetic R eye. First initial prosthetic eye was in 1951, with aprox 6 replacements. Any information would be SO helpful. He does not take his prosthesis out daily, and prefers not to remove it.

Hi Lisa,
Mike White MD, Tiffany Hamm BSN and I have just talked about your question. Below is a blurb by the UHMS Safety Committee:
"If your risk assessment uncovers that the object is solid, is not likely to be affected by changes in pressure, and the patient consents, it may be perfectly fine to allow a solid ocular prothesis within the Multiplace or Monoplace hyperbaric environment. This allowance is wholly dependent upon your individual risk assessment performed by the Medical Director and Safety Director of your facility. We would also suggest consulting with the patient’s ophthalmologist to confirm the type of prosthesis"
